Dogs have always been a part of human civilization, whether it was through their hunting and tracking abilities at the beginning of time or their cuddling and playful behavior in the modern era. Adopting a dog can always be a life-changing experience but also a challenge. Dogs have always filled our homes with unending loyalty and wagging tails, and it can also be a challenge. In our blog post titled “Guide to Pre-Parenting Stage of Dog Adoption,” we go into detail about a number of the considerations that should be made when adopting a dog. With this let’s look at some of the most common breeds available in India and their pros and cons of adoption.

Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever was primarily used as a gun dog, specializing in waterfowl retrieval, before becoming proficient at the sport of pet ownership and evolving into the adored family member we know today. In today’s world, including India, the Labrador is the most well-known dog breed.

Golden Retriever

Golden retrievers were bred to be active and have a soft mouth for game retrieval because they were frequently used as hunting dogs. Their ancestors came from the Scottish Highlands. The breed first gained popularity as family pets in the United Kingdom due to their extremely friendly nature before evolving into beloved family members all over the world.

German Shepherd

German shepherds are a breed of dog that originated in Germany, as their name suggests. This canine companion has long served as both companion and servant for humans. The term “German” was dropped during the First and Second World Wars, and the dog breed became known as the Shepherd Dog Alsatian. Not only were they able to make excellent police dogs, but they also became beloved family members all over the world, including in India.

Beagle

Beagles were initially used as flushing dogs for hunters and gun dogs in addition to hunting hares. By the end of the 19th century, the breed had developed over time in England and had become a well-known and improved breed in North America. Beagles of today are still hunted and regarded as good family and companion dogs.

Pug

The Pug, a beloved toy breed, has origins dating back to 400 B.C. when similar dogs were bred in ancient China. Some say they were brought to Europe by Dutch traders, while others say they came from small Bulldogs or short-haired Pekingese. Pugs became popular in European courts, particularly during the Victorian era, and were favored by royalty. Pugs are well-known for their intelligence and charm, making them excellent watchdogs and performers. They are adored today for their loyalty, expressive faces, and lovable, fun-loving personalities.

Shih-Tzu

The Shih-Tzu, which looks like a small lion, came from Tibet and was bred in Peking, the Forbidden City, by crossing the Lhasa Apso and Pekingese. The first pair arrived in England in 1930. The breed was recognized in Britain in 1946 and in the United States in 1969 by the American Kennel Club. Today, the Shih-Tzu is a popular companion and show dog all over the world, including India.

Rottweiler

Since Roman times, Rottweilers have served us humans as driving or herding dogs, making them one of the oldest surviving pets. In the 1930s, these dogs were first taken to Britain and were authorised by the Kennel Club in the year 1966. From that point on, they gradually became popular, first as a herding dog and then as a family pet.

Pomeranian

The Pomeranian has origins steeped in the history of the German Spitz. Pomeranians became popular as lap dogs in the 18th century, charming both nobles and commoners with their abundant, fluffy coats and fox-like faces. They became beloved companions and alert watchdogs, admired for their lively personality. Pomeranians are adored for their upbeat, affectionate nature as well as their sharp intelligence. They remain popular for their distinctive look, charm, and playful demeanour.

Boxer

The boxer breed originated in Germany in the late 19th century, a descendant of the now-extinct Bullenbeiser which was crossed with bulldogs to produce hunting dogs. They started out as cattle herders after being bred to hunt large game like deer and bear. They found themselves on the front lines of the First World War quickly. When soldiers began to take them back to their homes in the United Kingdom and the United States of America following the end of the Great War, their popularity increased worldwide.

Dachshund

In the beginning, the Dachshund was developed in two sizes. In the past, the miniatures chased foxes and hares while the standard size continued to hunt badgers and wild boar. Additionally, there is a medium-sized Dachshund in Germany. Its courageous and intelligent personality, combined with its lean, long body, may produce an alarming foe for foxes, hares, and badgers. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as soon as it arrived in the United States in 1885, but it gained international fame in the 1930s and 1940s.
